【Chapter 13】

❝𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐲 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡.❞

The sky above was gloomy and unmoving—the Earth's sun now shying beyond the curtain hung so very low to the ground as even the light posts could barely give light enough to shed away from the dreary atmosphere. Today was dull... that was clear. Letting out a shaky breath, (Y/n) waved goodbye to Light as she calmly watched them walk away.

"That woman... lied to Light. That was not her real name—how funny..." Whispering this privately to Ryuk's ear, (Y/n)'s eyes wavered away from the sight as she wandered the other way. (Y/n) had no other good reason for walking along with both Light and Naomi... (Y/n) knew that the poor boy wasn't an idiot, and he would eventually figure things out on his own. Indulging him would be... unnecessary.

Ambling serenely along with Ryuk, (Y/n) stuffed her hands within the pockets of her jacket as the somber atmosphere called for a chilly evening. It wasn't that she was cold... it was just that she wished to seem cold. Maybe then she would appear more human—albeit (Y/n) shunned to admitting it. Thinking back on the events that occurred today, (Y/n) didn't know what to think... she knew she had promised Light that she would aid him in the best of her wishes, but... At the same time, the thought of leaving Light to be burned and killed was far too enticing. Although against the orders of her King, (Y/n) wanted to see Light panic as control slowly slipped from his fingers... Just for satisfaction.

Sensing that Ryuk was about to touch her shoulder, (Y/n) smacked his hand away before speaking up in a rather relaxed tone. "What is it? Ryuk—you better not say any stupid shit..." (Y/n) said exasperatedly—she detested when others disturbed her when she was thinking... Especially at such a time. Chuckling in delight at the snappy attitude of his dearest "friend", Ryuk floated over to her side before leaning down towards her height. "You seem distracted—what's the matter? Is that little mortal really making you worry...?" Frowning at the thought of his dearest "friend" being sidelined by a mere boy, Ryuk almost groaned in distaste until (Y/n) let out a muffled sigh in response.

"... Ryuk. You are a pain in the ass, you know that...?" Glancing over to him as she said that, (Y/n) felt their hardened expression soften at the sight of Ryuk trying to make ridiculous faces in order to cheer her up. "Hey—cheer up! At least you have an ass... I guess that's pretty good...!" Ryuk laughed as he saw the slight smile slip past (Y/n)'s features. Ryuk slung an arm over her shoulder as the two began to look forward.

"Look at the sky! Someone must have died today—isn't that reason enough to celebrate? Another reaped soul, another golden emblem to our lives! With each life lost to our hands... the sweeter the world becomes!" Snickering like a lunatic at his words, Ryuk peered down over at (Y/n) as he managed to break a smile onto her face. Cheering in his head, Ryuk ruffled up her hair before (Y/n) gave his hand a gentle nudge away. "You're right... you're right, Ryuk... Truly a blessed day..." (Y/n) uttered as a chuckle escaped her parted lips.

Silence enveloped the two before Ryuk cleared his throat as he tenderly clutched at her hand (of which (Y/n) allowed) before calmly leading her to another end of the street. "Hey... do you wanna go hang out in the place called the "park"...? Heard some good things from there..." Ryuk spoke to her gingerly as (Y/n) looked a little bit... downcast at the moment in his eyes. Shifting her gaze over towards him, (Y/n) gave him a faint nod before offering him a gentle smile.

"Okay..."

If there was anyone in the entire realms who (Y/n) knew she could trust... it was Ryuk. The little bitch just knew her.

Cries rang out within the park as two or three kids ran away from the swing set in terror and back toward their mothers. Both Ryuk and (Y/n) howled like hyenas in delight as they watched the young mortals run and hide in fear—it was such a pleasant way to pass the time... It seems that even children can't stand the sight of the appalling thing that was Ryuk.

Picking up the candy of which she stole from one of said children, (Y/n) grinned cheerily down at the Snickers bar before she began to chew peacefully at the rich chocolate flavor. "Did—did you see them?! Fucking pathetic...!" Holding onto his stomach as he fell down onto the ground, (Y/n) calmly chewed at her snack before giving his side a gentle kick in response. "... Giving them a piece of your death note was stupid, Ryuk. Now they're gonna be able to see you in any moment..."

Turning her focus over towards the crying children, (Y/n) let out a fulfilled sigh before smirking to herself. It truly was such a sight... fear was always a pleasing thing to see. Ryuk began to get back up as he glided back over towards the swing set before shaking his head—a wide smile on his grimy face. "Ah... it's like a nice little treat for me... I thought you would have a blast with that one!" Ryuk exclaimed as he began to jab at (Y/n)'s side only for her to jab the candy wrapper into his ear earning loud squeals.

"No! No! Not the ear—uncle! Uncle!"

Serenely staring as Ryuk fell back down and tried his best to swat away her hand, (Y/n) laughed in enjoyment as a wide smile spread across her face like a flower blooming in late April. "I'm definitely having a blast with this one, Ryuk..." Giggling as she said this, (Y/n) only stopped once she felt like someone was nearing her... and someone that she knew very well...

Turning her face to the side, (Y/n) watched as a rather... tired-looking guy came walking up towards her. With their hands wedged into their pockets and his back hunched like a hill, (Y/n) gave away a weak frown before offering the approaching man a pleased smile at his presence. Immediately letting go of Ryuk, (Y/n) discreetly pushed Ryuk back off of the swing as he tried to sit back once more before (Y/n) offered the "empty" seat to her dearest friend: L.

"Ryuzaki! Where'd you come from... thought you would be more busy dealing with those detectives and the case than to be taking a stroll down memory lane and go into a park..." (Y/n) spoke in a rather enthusiastic tone—her face radiant and joyful. With a tender smile on her face, (Y/n) watched as L sat right by her as she began to swing back and forth. L remained hushed for a moment more before speaking—his voice low but off... as if he was doing more thinking than talking.

"... you know why I'm here." L said in a soft voice, his fingernail being bitten tenderly in between his front teeth as their black eyes concentrated on the scuffled ground below. Hearing this, (Y/n) chuckled in amusement before nodding her head as her swing fell back down. "Why, yes! I do know why you're here... and the fact you know that I know is so very interesting to me. I did say I wished to be involved in your little journey... didn't I?"

L remained still—not speaking a single word. Biting down at his nail as he thought, L eventually caught sight of the candy wrapper on the floor before picking it up. Glancing over toward his friend, L opened his hand—motioning for (Y/n) to give him more. "Candy... do you have more candy?" L's voice felt far off... As if it was a simple echo. Noticing this, (Y/n) kept the same cheery smile as she shook her head in denial.

"Nope! I got that from a grocery store the other day so I'm fresh out... should've came sooner." Flicking away a strand of her hair, (Y/n) continued on with her activities as she ignored the persistent and unwavering stare of L that focused on her every move... What an amusing man.

Nodding his head in understanding, L glanced over towards the crying children before turning his focus back over towards (Y/n). "I know you can lie better than that, (Y/n)... Taking candy from children is wrong..." L calmly stated—his somber eyes steady. In response, (Y/n) merely pouted at his words as she continued on with her swinging. "Oh, come on... You know I would only ever do that even in a state of madness—I am a human... I am no cruel thing..." Watching as L resigned and looked back down, (Y/n) smiled faintly to herself at what she had said... she was far from human.

Spotting that Ryuk was now hiding behind a bush, (Y/n) recognized that she better wrap this up soon and do whatever L wished for her to do... Since she was planning on spending the day with Ryuk. Turning her head over towards L's area, (Y/n) gave him a sunny smile before grazing her fingers across his hair as she swung back up. "So... just a simple TED talk to your men is all? I think I can do that—my father has said that I have a way with words..."

'Especially when it comes to riling up the fear of others.'

Feeling his heart still for a moment as her nails lightly skimmed over his skull, L peeked over towards (Y/n) as he watched her and her actions... only for him to give a nod in response. "Just a simple talk—introduce some normal person to ease the tensions between us... make things more... casual..." As L explained this to her (Y/n) merely nodded along even if the story was rather... unnecessary. If she could have persuaded her King to have mercy upon her and her disobedient acts... Then this would be simple as well.

"Alright... lead the way!" Smiling faintly as she said this, (Y/n) suddenly braked the swing as she dug her shoe against the ground. Getting up from her swing, (Y/n) peered over toward Ryuk before motioning for him to stay behind as she swiftly made her way back toward L. Hoisting an arm over the man's shoulder, (Y/n) chatted and joked with him as they made their way towards the sleek black car that awaited at the gates of the public park.

Not bothering to protest as he felt her arm hang over his shoulder, L simply looked at her from the side as she blabbered on and on about things that were trivial... but L took no action to stop her. He liked hearing her talk... (Y/n)'His voice felt weirdly... soothing. As the two made their way back towards the car as (Y/n) went along with her one-sided conversation, L bit down at his lower lip as he began to contemplate some things...

'... Should I? No... no I shouldn't... (Y/n) would be weirded out...'

As he fought a battle in his thoughts did L's head begin to tilt to the side until it was resting on her arm—their messy black hair now tousled and fallen over his eyes as he could no longer see perfectly, but it was okay... L knew he could trust (Y/n) to guide his way. Feeling her voice along with her cold body lull himself into a sense of relaxation, L... L smiled briefly as he felt all of his worries melt away one by one...

Is this what having a safe person felt like...? How tragic L couldn't know of this until now...

"—and so I said, "It's no wonder she broke up with someone who looks like a shriveled-up ballsack"!. Like, was I in the wrong? Really took his first form as a sperm cell to the extreme..."
